LINYANTI

1Africa.
South Africa.
According to a standard and the history of the land, the cradle of the Rhodesian Ridgeback.
Rhodesia, today's Zimbabwe entered the history with a dog with a ridge.
South Africa is gifted with an amazing natural heritage and has been and long will be captivating travellers.
South African region spreads itself from tropics to almost 35 degrees south latitude. It includes the Republic of South Africa and surrounding countries - Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho and Swaziland.
Warm waters of the Indian Ocean flow along the east shores of Africa and the cold Bengal current flows towards the North along the western shores.
South Africa, that means vast deserts and reservations, areas, which differ from one another, but together they form the core of the "real" Africa.
Africa is represented by "the big five" - the elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and rhinoceros.

National park Chobe, a huge piece of land rich in game at the very north of Botswana, is rightfully considered to be one of the mot beautiful African reservations of untouched nature. Northern border of the park is lined with Linyanti and Chobe Rivers, which are in fact only different parts of the same river. The river flows towards the East. Close to Kasane, an administration centre of the national park Chobe, the river flows into mighty Zambezi River. The confluence is the place where also four countries meet: Zambia, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia).

The Linyanti River spreads itself into a big flapper of smaller streams which form swamps, beautiful Linyantian wetlands. Here in the river flood-plains and on the banks of Linyanti the concentration of the wildlife is the richest. The nature here is plentiful, diverse and extraordinary. Very rare kinds of antelope, lechwe (kobus leche) and puku (kobus vardonii), live in this corner of Africa and cannot be found anywhere else. Most animals come to this place to drink at midday, during dry months a 300-members herd of elephants can be spotted here. The park Chobe is a habitat of approximately 35,000 of these giants, which is more than in any other African reservation.
Swamps around Linyanti are beautiful, especially during floods. Branches of the river are lined with papyrus and wild date palm trees, lianas and acacia and kiaat trees. Rhinoceros and crocodiles are plentiful in waters. A lot of birds live both in the river and the wetlands. Among the four hundred kinds living here we can find even white pelicans which with there over three metres long wings fly easily in the air forming a V-shape. Some birds such as Wattled Crane (Bugeranus carunculatus) or Black-headed Heron (Ardea melanocephala) do not occur in many other places of Africa.
When the rain comes the land turns green with nutritious grass which causes numerous herds of zebras, buffalos, giraffes, gnus and antelopes to come to this place from northern rivers.

Freely living animals and their colourful life can be seen quite often. More than sixty species of mammals including four animals from the "big five" - the elephant, buffalo, lion, and leopard - can be sighted here.
The lion is one of the big beats of prey of this area.
The lion is still considered to be the king of savannah and the wilderness. Thanks to its spectacular mane, noble appearance, big amber eyes and mighty roar the lion is a symbol of animal power and magnificence. Lions are family types.
The beauty of lions is emphasized by a natural white line just below their eyes which at night reflects and magnifies even the least bit of light and makes the African lion one of the most feared hunters of the night.

The lion and the Rhodesian Ridgeback are the symbols of Africa for me. Africa is interwoven with a great number of rivers which provide water and therefore life for local animals . The vast wetlands of Linyanti are one of the last untouched wetlands in the world .

And that is where the name of the LINYANTI breeding station comes from.
